The Computer Simulation for AS/RS

Formosa Heavy Industries Corporation (FHI) has built more then 533 sets of Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS) in Taiwan, and has accumulated its technology and experience nearly four decades. FHI can provide its customers a system integration service –planning and design, engineering, construction, test and commissioning for the AS/RS. Its customers
or applications are of varied industries such as petrochemical, spinning and textile, mechanical and electrical manufacturer, distribution center…etc.
In 1980 FHI employed the simulation software --AutoMod II, in order to improve the accuracy of design for the system, as well as a better control on the system operation and its sensitivity over the changes of the system parameters. This software functions with complete modules of AS/RS equipment and components and provides a real time 3D animation for the designed AS/RS. With the software the designer can well predict how the system will operate and solve the neck problems before installation, so as to achieve an optimized design for the system.
Reasons to Adopt the Computer Simulation
To ensure the success of the system:
As in the early years, without the computer analysis to predict the future operation of the system, the best performance of AS/RS mainly depends on the individual-owned experience of the designer. Since FHI designers has adopted the computer analysis to optimize the design and simulated the system
operation at the design stage, the customer could justify their investment and ensure the success of the AS/RS before putting into operation.
To ensure system upgrade meets future operation requirement On upgrading existing system to meet business growth, it is necessary to evaluate the new operation model before implementation. Through the simulation model, we can validate the new material flow pattern to see it will meet the requirement
or not? And make sure there is no throughput bottlenecks in future operation.
Pocedures of Computer Simulation
The system layout and the demanded storage/retrieval frequency are the basic input data needed for the system simulation of the logistics. These data can be streamed (through the IGES data exchange system) into AutoMod/ AutoSched from other CAD system, in order to build up the appropriate modules for simulation.
After the modules being set up, the system operation can be visualized through the 3D animation on the computer monitor, viewing can be zoomed in to look into detailed motions. Different prospective views of the operation can be achieved by setting up the degrees of rotation of the modules, and variation of
parameters can be checked any time during simulation.
By checking the dynamic system characteristics (shown by means of different charts or diagrams) and the statistic figures during the simulation process, potential bottlenecks can be detected. After several times of modification, the design engineer will achieve an optimal system acceptable to the customer in the end of the simulation. A videotape of the result of simulation also
can be presented to the customer for reference.
